BROTHER & SISTER SHARE IN 2nd LARGEST POWERBALL JACKPOT EVER

  • Brother and sister Michael J. Kearney, Jr., and Kathleen E. Kearney claimed their POWERBALL® winnings today at the Delaware Lottery Office in Dover.

  • After Federal withholding tax, they will receive $30,051,852.56. The winners have agreed to split their winnings.

  • Michael is a civil litigation and employment attorney from Pittsburgh, PA.

  • Kathleen is a first-grade teacher who lives in Hockessin.

  • Kathleen, originally from Pittsburgh, moved to Delaware in 1971 to teach. She spent this summer in Pittsburgh caring for her mother. She returned to Delaware August 21 when school started.

  • Michael asked Kathleen to buy POWERBALL® tickets for the Saturday, August 25 drawing when it reached $295 million; Kathleen bought tickets twice-once at Books & Tobacco and then again at Acme in Lantana Square Shopping Center in Hockessin.

  • Kathleen had the tickets; she did not check the numbers until last night after being prompted by telephone calls from Michael.

  • Michael took a 10:30 p.m. flight into Philadelphia from Pittsburgh last night, arriving at Kathleen's at 2 a.m. They left for the Delaware Lottery Office this morning to validate their ticket and claim their prize.

  • Michael is married and has two daughters, a 16-year old and an 18-year old.

POWERBALL® WINNING NUMBERS (drawn on August 25, 2001): 8 17 22 42 47 PB: 21

  • The winning ticket, sold at Delaware Lottery Retailer Books & Tobacco in Lantana Square Shopping Center, Hockessin, was one of four winning tickets for the $294.8 million POWERBALL® jackpot.

  • The winning number was on a $5 Quick Pick ticket sold at 8:06 PM, Saturday, August 25.

  • Seven $100,000 winning tickets were sold in Delaware; as of August 30, five have been claimed. Thirty- six $5,000 winning tickets were sold in the state.

  • Delaware ranked number one in per capita sales among the 22 member lotteries in the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the POWERBALL® game.

  • This is the fifth winning ticket for a POWERBALL® jackpot to be sold in Delaware.
