Delaware Lottery Awarded For Excellence In Print Advertising

Dover, DE - October 10, 2013 - The Delaware Lottery is pleased to announce it is the proud recipient of a 2013 Batchy Award in the category “best color print advertising” presented by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) during its annual conference held this year in Providence, RI, from October 1 to October 3, 2013. The Batchy Award is considered the highest national award among lotteries and given by NASPL. It is named after Ralph Batch, NASPL’s first president, who also served as Delaware Lottery Director from 1977 to 1985 and was a true pioneer in lottery advertising.

Today, his award, referred to as the “Batchy,” seeks to honor those who have achieved excellence in Corporate Communications, Radio, Print, TV Advertising and the newly added award for Responsible Gaming.

The Delaware Lottery is recognized specifically for its excellence, innovation and strategic marketing approach to its HOT LOTTO® “Smoke Signals” print ad. The Smoke Signals ad was part of the Delaware Lottery's "Hotter than Ever" HOT LOTTO campaign that ran in Delaware's daily publications The News Journal and The Delaware State News from May to June. The ad was designed to build Delawarean’s awareness of HOT LOTTO and to advertise that the game now features larger set prizes and all-cash jackpots with prepaid federal withholding taxes.

This is the third Batchy Award the Delaware Lottery has received from NASPL. The first was the 2001 World Meet NASPL Batchy Award in the category “best ad radio” for Lotto/Spiel Games and the Delaware Lottery’s campaign “Welcome to Rolldown Country.” The second was awarded in 2002 for the Lottery’s website homepage, delottery.com that was re-launched the previous year in 2001.

Batchy Awards are selected, judged upon and awarded by a group of peers across state lotteries. The 2013 Batchy Award distinguishes the Delaware Lottery as one of the best in print advertising nationally and within a largely competitive lottery and advertising industry.

“It is an honor and great achievement to be recognized by our peers for our outstanding marketing and advertising efforts, which continue to be an important and effective means of communication with our players,” said Delaware Lottery Director Vernon Kirk. “Building on the Lottery’s mission of providing fun and entertainment, we truly take a unique marketing approach and try to incorporate these aspects into our advertising and messaging to players. The Lottery would like to thank its ad agency, the Star Group, for its aid and coordinated efforts to market HOT LOTTO and to NASPL for bestowing us with this prestigious award,” said Kirk.

In addition to being nominated and winning the Batchy Award for print advertising at the 2013 NASPL Awards, the Delaware Lottery was also nominated in the following Batchy Award categories:

  • Print-Outdoor: Keno Circles Outdoor;
  • Print-Coordinated Campaign: Instant Game Holiday Expressions Print Campaign; and,
  • Best New Media: Instant Game Holiday Social Media Meme Campaign.

About NASPL:
The North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) was founded in 1971. Evolving from an informal exchange of information among three pioneering lottery directors, the organization has now grown into an active association representing 52 lottery organizations.

Although the Association's membership and services have grown tremendously over the years, its basic mission remains the same as when it was founded more than 40 years ago -- to assemble and disseminate information and benefits of state and provincial lottery organizations through education and communications and where appropriate publicly advocate the positions of the Association on matters of general policy.
