Wilmington couple claims $755,000 LOTTO prize
Their reaction when they found out they were winners? "Shock!" the man said. "It's just shocking when you win. And nobody believes you!"
A couple from Wilmington claimed their $755,000 LOTTO prize from the August 13 drawing. The winners, a 42-year-old special education teacher and mother of two and a 44-year old mechanical designer, each received $275,575 (half the total prize minus $101,925 in federal taxes).
Regular LOTTO and POWERBALL® players, the couple purchased the winning ticket at the Shore Stop at Routes 5 and 24 in Millsboro on their way to the beach last week. Since they were going on vacation, they purchased tickets with the numbers they always play — based on birthdays — for the six drawings that would happen while they were away. The couple found out they were winners when they stopped back at the same Shore Stop on their way home and checked their tickets against the sign posted on the door.

DE POWERBALL® Winner #5 Shares in 2nd Largest Jackpot Ever
We all know siblings can be a pain in the neck. But sometimes their pestering pays off in a big way!
After spending the summer in Pittsburgh caring for her mother, first-grade teacher Kathleen E. Kearney returned home to Hockessin on August 21 for the start of school. Her brother, Pittsburgh attorney Michael J. Kearney, Jr., had asked her to buy POWERBALL® tickets for the August 25 drawing. At $294.8 million, the jackpot was the second-largest in POWERBALL® history and the third-highest Lottery jackpot ever.
Kathleen bought tickets at Books & Tobacco and at the Acme in the Lantana Square Shopping Center in Hockessin. But after the drawing, she didn't check her numbers. Meanwhile, a buzz was spreading throughout the country four tickets matched the winning numbers in the 22-state drawing, but only three winners had come forward. Kathleen didn't think anything of it but luckily, her brother did!
Michael called repeatedly from Pittsburgh until finally, on August 29, Kathleen checked their tickets and discovered they were winners!
Wasting no time, Michael caught a late-night flight to Philadelphia, and first thing on August 30, brother and sister arrived at the Delaware Lottery Office with their winning $5 Quick Pick ticket. The elated twosome chose the single-payment cash option and claimed their after-tax prize of $30,051,852.56 which they agreed to split. So much for sibling rivalry!

Winning a Durango the day before your son turns 16 may seem like a dream come true (for your son, anyway), but 49-year-old Bear resident William "Craig" Fromme and his wife Sue were more cautious. "He won't be getting it, but he will be allowed to drive it," said Craig.
The Frommes, both State of Delaware probation officers, won the first Durango SLT 4X4 in the Delaware Lottery's Durango Instant Game on May 27, 1999, with a ticket they bought at the College Square Pathmark in Newark. They drove away with a certificate worth more than $41,500 (MSRP of $29,950 plus estimated federal taxes). Then all they had to do was select a color and they opted for silver.

The next day was a holiday, so Godfrey stayed an extra day and claimed his prize on January 19, 1999 a delay that proved well worth his while. His after-tax winnings came to $18,000. As a frequent traveler, Godfrey plays the Lottery in many states. "The instant scratch games are fun," he says especially at 3 a.m.!
